Election Violence in the North Eastern States of India

In the midst of peaceful election there’s some election violence in the North East during 15 LS election. The region had first, second & third phase of polling where nearly half of the polling booths identified in the three categories of sensitive, very sensitive and hyper-sensitive. Strong contingents of Army, central paramilitary & state forces have fanned out all over the States against any attempt by militant outfits to sabotage the polls and to ensure a smooth polling.

At least four EVMs were damage at Papum Pare, Ziro, Daporijo and West Kameng districts in Arunachal Pradesh. In Manipur suspected militants destroy EVMs at Senapati, Chandel, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts. In Nagaland, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were damaged by miscreants in two polling stations. In Sikkim an EVM was smashed at Sukhaipokhari and in Assam EVMs were drowning in a pond at Alangpur, couple of EVMs and voting papers were damage at Katlicherra and Three EVMs smashed at Kanthalguri.

Pressman of “Mawphor” of Shillong was assaulted by miscreant and a reporter “Eastern Mirror” of Nagaland was assaulted by IRB personnel. In Manipur, Militant fires at residence of general secretary of All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) at Imphal East District fired several rounds at the residence of Congress worker under Heingang, Imphal, where as Militants thrashed three people including church chowkidar and abducted one youth of from Zoveng at Curachanpur district. The former INC candidate of Nagaland was hit on the head with a stick by miscreant. A group of Nepalese from Mawkoibari allegedly assaulted Preingly Pariong of Mawdiangsnam village in Meghalaya. In Assam, miscreants set afire the election office at Jalah Bhangurichuba & Bamunigaon was totally smashed and election offices of the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) in Changsari, three houses of BPF were set afire, a BPF worker was assaulted with sticks by BPPF supporters at Barimukh in Baksa district. One killed and 23 people injured including 12 women supporter of BPF and two minors in clash between two party workers. Two supporters of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha were injured in a clash with Adivasis in Banarhat’s Palashbari Tea Estate. In Dimapur, voters resorted to stone pelting and police lathi charge where one police man was seriously injured and several voters injured in the altercation.

One youth was injured and another shot death by police commandos in Imphal. Militants hurled hand grenade and shot dead one at Imphal East District. Militants placed a bomb at Porompat residence of Dr S Kumar, Bomb blasts at the Congress office at Nambol, Wangkhei and threats to individuals. However, police nabbed five PREPAK, four UNLF, one KCP cadres were arrested, and about 15 militants were shot death in different parts of Imphal Valley. A jawan of Assam rifles and other six including JCO and havildar killed at Kangapat, Ukhrul district. In Assam, militants shot one villagers to death at Karbi Anglong, threw grenade at Udalguri and Mankachar PS, but failed to explode, an IED found near the Polling station at Disobai, Karbi Anglong, Bomb Blast at Gauhati, killing 7 people and wounding 60 others, where as two police officers injured in the blast. A powerful IED bomb blast at Balipukhuri village at Dhekiajuli PS, Two powerful bombs at Forest Gate near Lokhra, and two powerful bombs found in Lakhra Charaili & Karbi Anglong dist. Two BSF jawans were shot death at Karbi Anglong. One CRPF and a civilian were shot death in North Cachar by militant. A personal bodyguard of the SP Kiphire, Nagaland, absconded with two A.K. rifles, sten carbine and 180 rounds of live ammunition from SP residence. One BSF man and a civilian injured in bomb explosion Bhandarima at India-Bangladesh border line in North Tripura.

One Polling officer found dead in a room at Damin Arunachal Pradesh. A polling official at Howraghat in Karbi Anglong district of Assam found slit his throat just as voting opened. One CRPF shot his colleaque at Dayapur, Assam. The Central observer’s driver was shot dead by Personal Security Officer (PSO) in North Sikkim Gangtok. A police constable, detailed for polling duty at Phyochu, Wokha district shot himself dead at Nagaland. Where as police nabbed two militants as DHD (J) cadres from Dimapur.

In Assam, Police & army shot death one ULFA and one civilian and two police died in an encounter with militants at north Cachar. Five people injured in a bomb blast at Batachipur Road including security personnel. And there was a grenade blast at Shantipur, Karbi Anglong district with no casualty.
